The plot kicks off when Derice Bannock (Leon Robinson), a talented young sprinter, is accidentally tripped during the Olympic trials for the 100-meter dash, crushing his dream of competing in the Summer Olympics. Refusing to give up, he discovers that a former American gold medalist, the disgraced and bitter Irving "Irv" Blitzer (John Candy), now lives in Jamaica. With Irv's reluctant help, Derice assembles a ragtag team of unlikely athletes: his quirky best friend, Sanka Coffie (Doug E. Doug); the wealthy Junior Bevil (Rawle D. Lewis), whose father pressures him to join the family business; and the gruff, talented Yul Brenner (Malik Yoba). Together, these four tropic-born young men set out to defy all odds and compete in the unlikely sport of bobsledding at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada.
